Welcome! This is the art website for Van Buren Elementary. On the left, you will find a heading with your students' grade. Projects per grade will be recorded in those headings. General information pertaining to everyone will be stored here! Other things we did at art camp include: nature mandalas, model magic sculptures (which we then painted), Flubber, rain sticks, and "stained glass" sharpie colored wax paper, exploding paint bags, and ice paint!
Action Art Day! For Action art day, the students put their initial on the foam board with painter's tape. Then we did 6 different stations to apply paint to the foam board. We used a paintbrush attached to a drill, we did buddy paint (paint bags with holes attached to a ruler, pulled between two people), and we also did some printing with cds, texture rollers, and balloons. Then next time, we squirted paint out of squirt guns (not gun shaped), shot paint covered marshmallows with slingshots, and printed with bubble wrap, plastic dinosaurs, and cookie cutters. Whoa- by the end of the day I had some SERIOUS cleaning to do :) The canvases looked so amazing I couldn't stop taking pictures of them! The next day, we removed the painter's tape, and it looked like this... <3 <3 <3
We had 2 days worth of students working on each of these panels. First graders, Kindergarteners, Third and Fifth Graders all contributed to this project. They first traced shapes, then connected them with lines. Then each group of students added a little more paint. They turned out seriously beautiful. The paper we used was really thin and after putting them on the lunch room windows they looked like stained glass. Mrs. Warner personally loves going in to lunch and seeing the students talking about the art.
We also discussed the term "abstract" and looked at examples. We have 5 students right now with their work on display at the Children's Museum. Click the photo to be linked to the third grade page for an explanation and pictures!
The kindergarten, first, and second graders were all given part of a circle. They filled it in with designs and covered all the white. They were put together to create this eye catching mural. It continues the idea that we are all working together toward learning and we are all part of something greater!
The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders created hands designed with their name, designs, and their likes and dislikes. This new fancy bulletin board is featured near our front office. Come check out our lovely mural-- we're all part of something greater than ourselves!
:) Since we're on a four-day rotation, I have the same classes Friday as I do on Mondays. In order to not get too ahead of the other classes, we usually do a fun one-day lesson on these days. For August, the upper grades (3rd-5th) have been sketching in the courtyard. Kindergarten mixed colors with balloons and first and second grade created bubble prints. Happy Friday! How are grades configured for art? The grade system won't change from last year but you may be wondering just how I arrive at the grades. Kindergarten doesn't receive a grade for specials.
Everyone else gets 2 entries for art per quarter. One grade is a simple effort grade. This reflects on-task time, listening to directions, following class rules, etc. The other entry reflects the large project we completed for that quarter. I do not grade on how "good" the artwork is. I take into account 1) ability of student to complete the task 2) following directions and goals of the project 3) staying on task and helping others. Basically, if your child is a great listener and does as they are asked, their innate artistic ability (or lack of) will not get them a worse grade. There will be a short description of the project as the title in Powerschool, and you can check here for pictures and an explanation of the process. Just click your child's grade (to the left on this blog) to see what they've been doing. Grades 1-2 will receive a 1 (hasn't met standard yet), a 2 (met standard) or a 3 (exceeds standard). A majority of students will receive somewhere in the 2 range. Grades 3-5 will receive a N (not satisfactory) a S (satisfactory -/+) or an O (outstanding). Most students will receive somewhere in the S range. If you are still confused about how to see your child's grade online using PowerSchool, ask your student's classroom teacher for more help. I usually enter grades near the end of the quarter. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions! :) |
