The third graders have been working on more symmetry projects. They created mandalas by using sharpies on old cds (recycling, anyone?). They turned out very beautifully! Then they created radial symmetry designs using their names. They traced these on the windows and then colored them. They create such interesting shapes, I have decided several would make great stained glass windows!
Surprisingly enough, the students only had to learn 4 very simple origami forms to create these beautiful designs. They used their new knowledge of symmetry to create designs that were mirror images from left to right (and sometimes top to bottom as well). After we practiced the forms, the rest of the project was up to the students. Some even created their own origami forms! I loved this project and I can't wait to have some origami frog races to round it off!
Three students have their work hanging up at the Children's Museum Haunted House this year. The theme is Wicked Woods, and all third grade students participated in the contest, creating creepy forest scenes! Out of all the entries, three of Van Buren's students were in the top 30 of all third grade participants. Everyone's work will come back after Halloween. Feel free to visit their work and see all the other great work at the Children's Museum haunted house. Great job, third graders!
Third graders first competed in the Children's Museum Haunted House art contest. Three students were judged to be in the top 30 of all third graders and their work will be hanging at the Children's Museum for the entirety of the haunted house! Those pictures will be up soon. Then students worked on some oil pastel flowers for their Art to Remember offering. The students create an artwork and a company makes merchandise that you can purchase with their artwork on it, with our art program benefitting from the sale. Some popular favorites are magnets (only $5) and phone cases (prices vary). There is no obligation to purchase anything and the students will get their work back regardless. They did a wonderful job and I am considering getting some printed on artwork myself!
Can you tell these amazing designs were made using student names? We wrote our names and then traced them backward and forward all over our paper. Since we went around a circle, this created a radial symmetry design. The letters created beautiful patterns. After coloring symmetrically, the designs look like something out of a kaleidoscope!
We kept up our oil pastel skills to make these bright and up close flowers. Hopefully they bring spring to the classrooms!
The third graders learned about symmetry. They created a double-sided stamp using Styrofoam. After a practice run, they printed their stamps onto their beautiful paintings. Their paintings were created using new knowledge of analogous colors (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel). They are turning out SO COOL. :) :)
The students learned how to use oil pastels and how to shade. We made a simple snowman together. Then the students made the snowmen their own by adding all these amazing details.
Third grade has been learning about the pop art movement, and especially Roy Lictenstein's comic book inspired designs. They also learned about complementary colors and how they create contrast when they are put close to each other. The students chose an action word and worked on their block lettering with some practice. Then they wrote the word and used complementary colors to make it stand out. The rest of the coloring was their choice. Did I mention they got to use ALL NEW markers? Whoa. So EXCITING!
The third graders have learned all about Pablo Picasso and created double face monsters. Cubism to Picasso was a new way to express himself that wasn't realistic. Many people don't know that Picasso started out painting very realistic and fantastic paintings. He broke the mold, though, and was always trying new things and pushing beyond what people wanted of him. Our monsters helped us talk about cubism and some of the choices Picasso made in his art. Also, they are a great addition to seasonal decorations :)
