The second graders have been hard at work (and for some reason, I am finding it hard to take pictures of all their work! Sorry!) These circles are inspired by the work of Kandinsky. We also learned that Kandinsky was a synesthete, meaning that he could HEAR colors! We used paint sticks, paper, and tempera cakes for this. They really look beautiful all together!
For the art show, the students drew and painted these beautiful owls. I didn't get a picture of their work in progress but they were a hit at the art show. I will take another picture when I get more back. :)
The second graders have been learning about two more elements of art, line and texture. They created these geckos and used different kinds of lines to create patterns. Then we painted them with watercolor. They look like they are going to jump and crawl away!
Second graders always learn primary and secondary colors as part of their yearly standards. This year to display what they learned they got the primary colors in paint and painted every color of the rainbow on these simple sailboats. They did an absolutely stellar job getting all the colors and making these sailboats their own. Looks like a place I'd love to visit!
The students learned all about clay before they made these clay monsters! They created them by starting with a pinch pot. Then they turned it on its side and gave it a flat bottom. They added body parts to create monsters with gaping mouths. Lots of colors of tempera completed our monsters' look. Wow! Creepy!
We learned about collages and geometric shapes to create these pieces of a neighborhood. We also reviewed what we learned about showing distance in our work. The students used their creativity and great eye to come up with these houses!
The students drew owls. They painted the owls with watercolors. Then they finished them up with oil pastels- using different lines to create different textures. They will be IN THE ART SHOW on March 15. Come see them FRAMED! You can buy them framed or just come to see how AMAZING they look. All artwork that isn't bought framed will be sent back to you!! And then there will be better pictures :)
We used only primary colors to create these amazing designs! The students learned about the color wheel and how it can help us learn how to make the colors if we forget. Then we used ONLY blue, red, and yellow crayons to create three different values of orange, 3 different values of purple, and 3 different values of green. To finish our designs and make them look FANCY, we painted the waxy designs with black paint and wiped it off. The result is a oilskin-looking, interesting piece of art for using only 3 colors of crayon. Love them!
We took some time out from our longer projects (pictures coming soon!) to do a one day action painting in the style of Jackson Pollock. We learned about Pollock and how his painting was like the recording of a performance: detailed, complicated, and almost impossible to reproduce. While Pollock used sticks to drop and stir his paint, we used marbles in trays to create a similiar looking effect. We started out with primary colors and added black last for a bold effect. They look great, artists!
The students started off the year working on effort and craftsmanship. Their first project was a mixture of kinds of lines (an element of art) and textures (another element of art!). These landscapes have visual distance and look like a fantastic land from far away. To try something new, the students were asked to put one texture on top of another using analogous colors.
