Over break, I found out that a grant proposal I wrote for the Legacy Foundation was accepted! It is much more fun to learn about artists and art through a variety of different ways besides slides on a screen (remember our childhood, parents?!) There are AMAZING picture books out there about the artists the students are learning about that really allow the students to connect to the artists on a more personal level. We received all of these books as a result of the grant. I can't wait to share them with the class as we continue on our journey learning about art together!

Wow, we have a lot of catching up to do! I think the end of last semester got away from me. Here's what we finished before break. Kindergarten and first made winter pictures that sparkled (due to some homemade Epsom salt paint) and also cut out winter scenes. Second Grade did an animal printmaking project. We learned about Andy Warhol and how he used other people's pictures and made them his own with crazy colors and designs. In their classrooms, the students did an animal project. So for art, we drew that same animal. We worked on drawing the picture as realistically as possible and filling up the entire space. This took awhile! Then the students created a stamp by tracing their picture onto a piece of scratch art foam. Finally we printed the animals in two different colors using the stamps. The fourth grade finished their Salvador Dali elephants. Some of these are hanging in the fourth grade hallway . The students worked very hard to get these finished before break. I love how dreamy they feel with the watercolors. What a tribute to Dali. Fifth grade has been working on these incredible scratch art designs. To create them, they colored a large sheet of paper. Then they painted over it with black paint. They used tools to scratch out the outline of an owl or a turtle (why these two completely different animals? I can't really say!) The results were very original, colorful, and fun to look at! The students really worked on everything they know about lines to complete this project. They will be coming home soon! Fifth grade also made these amazing marbleized paper prints. They created designs using shaving cream and food coloring. Then they printed the designs onto paper. This could easily be reproduced at home! The shaving cream also makes your room smell GREAT! :)
