The first graders worked on foil relief snowflake ornaments before Christmas and hopefully those made it to your tree. The students learned about Snowflake Bentley and his work on snowflake photographs. He made incredible quality photographs in the 1800s that are still relevant today. He helped publish the idea that no two snowflakes are alike and that different weather conditions create different kinds of snowflakes! The students drew snowflakes and I covered their designs with glue. Then the students put foil on the snowflakes, drew on them with sharpies, and added glitter glue and stickers. They turned out very sparkly and pretty!
Obviously this is EXTREMELY late, but for Thanksgiving we had a parade around the lunch room. The students held up their feathers, showing what they were thankful for. We sang one of their music songs and joined the music room. :)
To continue our experiments in color mixing, the first graders have been working on these mad scientist beakers. We learned about drawing forms, which are 3D objects that actually look 3D. We drew these great beakers. Then we used our color mixing skills to mix the secondary colors inside the beakers with watercolors. The background is multi colored bubbles with construction paper crayons on black paper.
Wow! The first graders have been amazing color mixing MAGICIANS using their "magic wands" (paintbrushes) to mix the primary colors to create BRAND NEW COLORS! Sorry I'm shouting, there's just so much excitement!! Up next, we are being mad (happy) scientists mixing colors in these beautiful 3D forms. It appears magic and science go hand in hand. And BEAUTIFUL ART!
The first graders have been working on what we affectionately call the "Underwater Fishy Picture." We learned a lot about fish and coral. We drew fish and focused on each of their body parts. We added to our pictures by watching underwater ocean pictures :) then today we started painting the water. They look SO BEAUTIFUL I just had to leave a little sneak peak!
Here is a sneak peek at what the first graders have been working on- Paul Klee castles! We learned about Paul Klee. Then we created castles by printing lines and shapes using cardboard and white paint. We filled in the spaces using chalk pastels. More pictures to come!
Here's our inspiration... The first graders created string art paintings! They used a string dipped in black paint to create these symmetrical designs. The next art time, they used colored pencils to decide what to make their design into. The things they are coming up with are absolutely adorable. They have such great imaginations. Good job, artists!
The first graders created shape robots! We learned about GEOMETRIC shapes and how they are shapes with names, like rectangles, circles, etc. The students used stencils to create their shapes on different colors of paper and glue them down. We looked at a lot of inspiration and even had HOMEWORK (to think about what our robot can DO!) When the students were done customizing their robots, they wrote about them! They included "My robot can..." and also, "My robot's name is____ and it has a _____!" The robots are so original and even funny. Great work, first grade!
For our winter themed project, we first had a crash course in perspective. One way to make a common drawing more interesting is by changing the perspective. We looked at our pencils from different perspectives to demonstrate this fact (try it at home!) If someone asks you to draw a pencil, you could technically draw a pink dot and tell them it's from the perspective of the top of the pencil! haha. When we drew our snowmen we made them all different. We used lots of crayon to make them waxy. For the second day, we used a very wet and salty watercolor technique that created these splotchy snowy skies. Beautiful! Happy Winter and happy holidays!
First grade has been working on colors and color mixing. To create these color birds, we watched the Pixar short For the Birds. We drew birds using circle templates and added emotion and expression to their faces. Then we used watercolor to mix the colors in rainbow order. They did a white crayon resist in the background for the clouds. So cute!
